ABSTRACT

The kitchen becomes the heart of the setting where home-cooked meals are made daily, little cosy nooks are created throughout the areas to allow young children to snuggle up and read and large cloakrooms provide space to store outdoor clothing and safely store belongings. Many Danish settings create spaces that feel very calm and homely as it brings them comfort by transferring to somewhere with similar surroundings to what's familiar to them. When children feel a sense of security and comfort in their learning environment, they are more likely to take challenges with their learning, ask questions and even take risks. In the nursery provision for three-to four-year-olds there was more of focus on sand play with opportunity for language development. In reception classroom there was a deep outdoor sandpit with spades, large trugs and a pulley system that allowed children to develop upper body strength as well as a sand in miniature collection that worked on more precision skills.
