ABSTRACT

Reading at university is essential for two primary reasons: to expand our knowledge of the subject and its writing conventions, and to find specific information for use in our academic writing. Without adequate sources and background reading, our essays and assignments are likely to score poor marks. For students with dyslexia, reading can be problematic, disorientating, frustrating, and even demoralising. One of the biggest differences between a dyslexic and non-dyslexic reader is that people without dyslexia read in a linear, sequential manner, taking one step/sentence/paragraph/section/chapter at a time. People with dyslexia, on the other hand, need to see the ‘bigger picture’ and make connections based on ‘gist’ rather than detail.
