ABSTRACT

This chapter explores core challenges that practitioners and children alike are likely to face when approaching a curriculum or framework through a second language. It focuses on key strategies for overcoming these challenges and strategies on how to work with EAL children to provide best environment. EYFS Communication and Language framework is designed for those children whose first language is English; however, practitioners should reflect on the fact that developmental stages within the framework are not specific to English, they are specific to language. EAL children will have individual language learning needs as they are a part of a diverse population in a setting. As with all learners, the EAL group must be seen as a unique group. Practitioners must always keep in mind that EAL learners face multiple challenges in their learning: they have to acquire both academic and colloquial English; they must develop within a framework delivered in English; and they must overcome the culturally-bound aspect of schooling.
