ABSTRACT

This chapter will address the changing climate towards the arts by governments from seeing it as an important public good to placing it in an economic and instrumental framing. It will document the changes and the influences that have brought about the differing approaches and consider various definitions of value. Then the Federal Coalition Government’s relationship with the arts during the years 2013 to 2022 will be addressed. This will then move into consideration of the impact of the pandemic on the sector and the government responses. Finally, there will be a discussion of the approach of the Federal Labour Government, elected in mid-2022 and their policies for the arts.
