ABSTRACT

This chapter sets out an interpretation of a potential role that technology might take in both provoking and facilitating participation on matters of place with the aim of exploring the form that new digital technologies in planning could take. It recognises the influence that the built environment can have on individual perceptions, when participation is encouraged in issues concerning place, and whether it can serve to enhance people's interest in and understanding of urban change. The phone app complemented functionality of watch app, rather than duplicating the functions. The Apple watch remained the app's primary interface, but the phone's larger screen was suited for continuing comments with additional text. The app received locations from a server, which also served a website enabling the creation of areas and viewing of submitted comments publicly. The app was effective at simplifying methods of participation, but sometimes this oversimplification led to people simply reporting issues, rather than presenting a vision of the future.
