ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on how healthcare executives respond to crisis and use it as an impetus for meaningful change, innovation, and inspiration. The COVID-19 pandemic has been the ultimate test of leadership resiliency. The book provides an overview of the crisis literature within the context of COVID-19, a rationale for using a theoretical framework for organizing executive responses to crisis situations. It discusses characteristics of trusted leadership, and highlights the benefits of having trusted leaders at times of high-impact events that disrupt organizational or social functioning. The book describes an inclusive co-leadership model with distinct and overlapping roles, which inspires administrative and clinical leaders to collaborate and build resilience in healthcare leadership. It also focuses on identifying important functions of organizational culture, particularly with respect to the establishment of a culture of interprofessional collaboration.
