ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on examining how successful healthcare organizations leverage competitive advantages through the management of innovation. Adaptive systems and disruptive innovation require leaders with the capacity to simultaneously optimize the current business model through exploitation and inspire new ventures and outcomes through exploration. Ambidextrous leadership and innovation competencies enhance the effectiveness of healthcare leadership and contribute to the efficient delivery of safe, effective, and high-quality care. Adaptive organizations use ambidextrous platforms that mix operating efficiency and scale with innovation and agility to sustain their competitive advantage. For telework to thrive, managers must shift their mindset to focus on flexibility, results, and trust. Teledentistry allows dental professionals to remotely review records and diagnose patients over video more efficiently and to practice more safely during pandemic situations. The sharing of information will benefit the public by allowing the procompetitive collaboration to advance planning that could significantly reduce the lead time necessary to identify and test vaccines with greater efficacy.
