ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has been the ultimate test for leadership resiliency. Resilient leaders can sustain their energy level under pressure and have the confidence to take calculated risks to cope with disruptive changes and realign people with evolving operating models. There are four important attributes that describe the mindsets and behaviors of resilient leaders—adaptive, empathetic, analytical, and confident. Adaptive leadership has a crucial role to play in helping to identify common goals for collective action across different players and levels of the response. Empathetic leaders must also be adept at receiving and evaluating feedback on the effectiveness of their decisions. In times of crisis, employees, consumers, and partners alike tend to gravitate towards health systems whose purpose aligns with their values and beliefs. Identifying their needs and taking steps to actively foster and promote a strong culture of safety is an important goal of resilient leadership.
