ABSTRACT
The fundamental motivation for many of the early American progressives interested in some variety of “citizen diplomacy” was the Christian social gospel, as first articulated by Walter Rauschenbusch and others. This chapter explores the sources of this hugely important resource for the Americans who led this effort.
