ABSTRACT
From the 1950s we examine how all of the previous efforts prepared the way for the flurry of activity of the 1980s when citizen diplomacy was all the rage, and a huge array of American contacts, organizations, and groups met with their counterparts in the USSR: scientists, educators, religious leaders, activists, artists, and many others.
