ABSTRACT

In the forty-second year of the empire of Caesar Octavian, because the kingdom and priesthood of the Jews ended, in accordance with the oracles of the prophets our Lord Jesus Christ deigned to be born from a virgin for our salvation. When Julian the Apostate was made emperor, because he had converted to the cult of idols there was mild persecution, alluring rather than compelling people to sacrifice, into which many rushed of their own will. Because of his hatred of Christ, he also allowed the Jews to repair the Temple in Jerusalem. The Jews gathered from all the provinces and laid new foundations for the Temple. Born at Antioch where he was ordained lector of the Church by Meletius, bishop of the same city, and confessor, John ascended through each step of office. As a deacon there for five years, he wrote many books about God.
