ABSTRACT

Bishop Paul sat on the bishop's throne for four years, two months, and 6 days. He was bishop at the time of Pope Paul. While he was still deacon of the Church of Naples, Paul often went to the city of Rome as ambassador. Here he bonded with the pope with a pure friendship, when he was still adorned with the levite sash. Stephen sent three clerics to Rome, who were instructed very well at the school of the cantors and educated in every sacred rite of the Romans, after which they returned home. Stephen ordained one of them, Leo Maurunta, as cardinal priest; the other clerics were assigned to the Levite Paul in the monastery of St. Benedict. One of them, named John, who was later ordained deacon, shone for his great erudition.
