ABSTRACT

Bishop Athanasius the Younger, nephew of the aforementioned prelate Athanasius and son of Consul and Duke Gregory, sat on the bishop's throne for 22 years, 5 months, and 2 days. He was above all a man of superior ingenuity and extraordinary common sense. Shaken by a great terror because of that disaster and believing they would die because of famine, all the inhabitants went to the aforementioned prelate Athanasius so that he would give them spiritual advice and he would then beg the Lord to help them. He obeyed their entreaties with great speed and humility and together with them he put in place the healthy remedy of begging the Lord with fasting and alms, promising to build a basilica in honor of the blessed martyr Julian, and celebrating solemn masses there all together, because he had heard of such a disaster.
