ABSTRACT

In an ever-changing and dynamic global economy, innovation has become the most competitive asset in the industry if managed effectively and adequately. The primary objective of this chapter is to critically examine innovation processes in the Australian public sector. By analysing public sector innovation processes qualitatively, the authors identify the dynamics of innovation in the public sector. Hence, this chapter presents organisational barriers, leadership characteristics and organisational climate issues that impact the ability to innovate in Australian public sector organisations. The thematic and content analyses revealed crucial factors that stimulate or hinder innovation processes in the public sector, such as funds and budget; strategic, national and inclusive leadership; and workplace planning, measurement tools, initiatives, embracing diversity and collaboration and networking.
