ABSTRACT

The relationship between private- and public sector organisational culture is one that has not been explored in depth in academic literature. This highlights differences in the research undertaken between private- and public sector organisations and the gaps that are evidence in knowledge about how the public sector operates in many regards. This has been particularly evident when exploring the relationship between workplace innovation and public sector culture. Hence this chapter provides an overview of the differences between private- and public sector organisational culture. It then establishes the impact of culture at the micro-level in public sector organisations to workplace innovation. Research has found culture to be a significant antecedent to workplace innovation. Understanding this relationship provides the ability for managers to undertaken actions that can be taken to foster positive climates and build workplace innovation.
