ABSTRACT

The organisational culture and climate literature identifies that organisation life may be perceived differently by different demographic groups. This chapter reports on a study of demographic groups of gender, marital status, age and educational level within a public sector organisation to identify how they perceive workplace innovation related to public sector culture. Significant differences were found between demographic groups including identifying that gender was a factor in how individual innovation including the types of workplace innovation they were more likely to engage with. Workplace climate was found to be more important for women to support them in undertaking innovation. Age impacted the types of innovation carried out and older workers were found to be more likely to engage in individual innovation which appeared to relate to the complexity of public sector organisations and older workers being more able to navigate this complexity due to their organisational experience. This chapter outlines the differences experienced by demographic groups within the organisation and how it impacts on their ability to undertake workplace innovation.
