ABSTRACT

This chapter signals a shift in the focus of this book. Until now, this book focussed on the ways in which the spectacle of development shapes the work of community radio stations in India. This book now turns to how community radio stations work within these constraints to extract value and meaning. Drawing from development and communication literature, as well as examples from the data, this chapter argues that the most beneficial or valued work of community radio is based on the amplification of existing local knowledge communication systems. These systems pertain to both cultural and technical knowledge and also relate to the theoretical approach to community radio as rhizome in facilitating social connections and links between different organisations.
