ABSTRACT

The assessment of the work of Southwark Community Project (SCP) indicates the potential of a coalition of neighbourhood groups and one kind of community work resource for effecting major changes in a locality. Involvement in neighbourhood groups resulted in residents acquiring new interests and ambitions. At one level, individuals came to know more about housing procedures, rental and rate allowances, and supplementary benefits. The North Southwark Community Development Group was successful in: promoting wider community understanding of redevelopment proposals; and changing the local authority’s redevelopment proposals for north-west Southwark. On the service side, the Multi-Service Group continues to meet, and the weekly advice centre provided by the social services area team still operates from the offices of Southwark North Action Groups. With most of the groups using the SCP, the worker had most contact with the officers of the groups.
