ABSTRACT

This chapter provides some criteria for assessing the contribution of the Southwark Community Project (SCP) as a resource to the community in north-west Southwark. In considering the SCP as a ‘community resource’ a good starting point is to consider the notion of ‘relevance’. The Project was an organisational support resource whose staff worked with other neighbourhood resources to achieve changes in the material resources of the area as well as changes in the service-delivery patterns of agencies and community groups. The function of a resource like the SCP in meeting the organisational needs of a community, in preparing people to take hold of the opportunities that more extensive structural change may bring, is crucial. The growth of organisational skills takes place within the context of improving the well-being of the neighbourhood and specific groups within it.
