ABSTRACT

The worker will talk to professionals in the neighbourhood as well as to those in the local authority who are responsible for that area. Introductions to residents and neighbourhood groups in northwest Southwark were also achieved by going to public meetings in the area called by established professionals and other community groups and organisations. Many individuals and groups came to the Project on their own initiative to request assistance in organising around different issues and/or to achieve greater cohesion within their groups and organisations. While community workers may believe that the selection of issues should properly be left to participants, the Project worker encountered practical difficulties in implementing this belief. The petition is a form of intervention that is frequently used by community groups. A public meeting was called for the residents of the tenement by the local tenants’ association, the local playground and by the individual residents who had helped in advertising and petition collection.
