ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to convey the phases of intervention of the Southwark Community Project (SCP) service worker, and the kind of roles, tasks and skills of her interaction with service agencies operating in north-west Southwark. We have indicated that one person in the Southwark Community Project was given primary responsibility for working with service agencies. It was a major task of the SCP service worker to maintain the credibility of the SCP as a resource relevant to the needs of agencies. We can identify five major roles of the SCP service worker. They are as advocate, innovator/stimulator, adviser, informant, and coordinator. The SCP service worker provided advice and consultation to workers in voluntary and statutory agencies. The SCP service worker sought, first, to bring agency staff together for discussions about needs and provisions; and, second, to bring agency staff and residents/consumers into joint discussions.
