ABSTRACT
Attitude to ageing was one of the variables used to construct the typology of old age homes. Its significance is apparent from the way actions are influenced by beliefs or assumptions. In effect the conservative approach expects old people to adjust to and be happy in situations that are demonstrably miserable and unsatisfactory. Far outweighing the risks of participant observation, however, are the advantages – of understanding the meaning of a situation for the people involved, of discovering new perspectives, indeed, of finding that a new set of questions has to be examined.
