ABSTRACT

The significant fact in relation to the care-system is that the problems related to the illness are coupled with an opportunity to demand a change. Hospitalisation is conspicuous and can become the event that leads to change. Twenty-six per cent of a group they interviewed on the waiting list for admission to homes introduced the issue of rejection when discussing changes in relationships. An important dimension that was mentioned earlier is the part played by the professional workers in influencing decisions. Therefore it is essential to know any differences between groups of workers about reasons for admission and the purpose of residential homes. The pressures placed on the area team were considerable and show the marked contrast with most other residential provision under social services’ control. While there is a shortage of places for any sort of residential home the demand for allocation comes from other professionals.
