ABSTRACT

A change in the medium of instruction raises many issues for EMI content teachers. EMI teachers bring a variety of dispositions to their teaching, reflecting their understanding and experience with EMI, their language and cultural backgrounds, their proficiency in English, as well as their teaching and learning philosophies and practices. This chapter examines the impact of EMI on the EMI subject teacher and draws on reports from teachers in different disciplines to illustrate what it means to be an EMI teacher. Issues discussed include the nature of EMI teacher identity, attitudes and beliefs towards EMI, teacher roles and responsibilities, the importance of English in the teacher’s discipline, the language demands of teaching in EMI, the influence of EMI on their teaching, the challenges of teaching in a multilingual and multicultural class, and the need for professional development.
