ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the difficulties that students experience when transitioning to EMI and the different approaches that institutions can adopt to support EMI students’ learning and use of English in EMI courses. With a focus on EAP, this chapter discusses the nature of EAP, and the implementation, course design, course organization, and teaching methods of which it makes use. The chapter describes pre-sessional language support and concurrent language support, and it compares a content-based, skill-based, and genre-based approach to EAP support with examples of courses in EMI institutions. This chapter ends with descriptions of teaching methods used in EAP to develop learners’ awareness and use of academic language as well as activities that can be used to support learning through the four skills.
