ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of approaches to the evaluation of EMI programs. The goals of program evaluation depend on the audience and how the information will be used. Two general purposes for evaluation are distinguished: (1) accountability-oriented evaluation aims to find out how effective an EMI program is and uses the information obtained to make decisions about related to the program content, the teaching, the learners, teaching materials, and assessment practices; (2) discovery-oriented evaluation is concerned with understanding different dimensions of an EMI program, such as how it is understood by teachers, learners, and other stakeholders. Procedures used in conducting an evaluation are discussed. The second part of the chapter provides case studies of both accountability and discovery-oriented program evaluations.
