ABSTRACT

In this chapter the different dimensions and features of English Medium Instruction (EMI) in various contexts are discussed. There are many forms of EMI, and it can be applied differently in the same school, institution, area, or country. The features of EMI are formatted in a typology to provide a framework with terminology that identifies the different forms and realizations of EMI. The typology can serve as an objective basis for comparing EMI across different contexts and to document how approaches to EMI are being modified or changed. Each category will be described in detail with examples. The typology can be used to profile and compare the characteristics of EMI in various contexts.
