ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the different care and support services available to support people living with dementia and their carers. It begins by outlining the various health services available at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels. This includes Admiral nurses, memory clinics, falls, continence, occupational therapy, intermediate and palliative care services. It explains about NHS CHC and NHS-FNC. It then covers social care services including, domiciliary, day and residential care as well as personal budgets. There is a critical discussion about the state of social care in the UK. The next section is on therapeutic services such as art, music and other creative activities that promote wellbeing. The following section discusses technology-enabled care and its advantages and disadvantages. Subsequent sections discuss advocacy services and other support organisations including Dementia Cafés. After signposting to carers support organisations, the chapter discusses the importance of identifying gaps and barriers and contributing to the development of services, including services for marginalised groups. Some international examples are provided.
