ABSTRACT

As a corollary to the proposition that all institutions must be subordinated to the law of equal freedom, the people cannot choose but admit the right of the citizen to adopt a condition of voluntary outlawry. “ No human laws are of any validity if contrary to the law of nature ; and such of them as are valid derive all their force and all their authority mediately or immediately from this original.” Hence, there is a certain inconsistency in the attempt to determine the right position, structure, and conduct of a government by appeal to the first principles of rectitude. There is a strange heterogeneity in the people political faiths. The substance of the chapter once more reminds the reader of the incongruity between a perfect law and an imperfect state. There are many changes yet to be passed through before it can begin to exercise much influence.
