ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the structure the technology adoption side of your EMR implementation project. Generally these functions include change management/technology adoption, training, communication, human resources, workforce planning, workflow harmonization, and user lessons learned. The project begins with the initial planning phase and transitions through implementation, stabilization, optimization and finally benefit realization. It is important to note that although we discuss the project phases as if they are discrete, they are in fact overlapping to some degree. During stabilization the ORT continues to support users in settling into a routine using the system, helps with adjustments to roles and workflows, ensures user skills are assessed, and provides additional training or coaching required to attain the expected level of proficiency. Unfortunately, just as with stabilization, organizations tend to rush through optimization trying to get to benefit realization, and this can actually delay achieving the goal.
