ABSTRACT
The final answer to Socialists, who imagine that it is possible to remedy the evils of poverty by compromising with Industrialism, is that, if they could be successful in their efforts, Industrialism itself would immediately collapse, for no one could be found to do the objectionable and dangerous work which lies at its base. In a new country like South Africa it has only hitherto been possible to get such work done by tempting the cupidity of workers who were anxious to make a pile in a short space of time and to return home. In this country the capitalist finds himself to-day under no such necessity. Apart from the use which is made of machinery, the most important difference between the present day processes of manufacture and those that obtained in the past is due to the use of chemicals.
