ABSTRACT

In this text Murphy envisages a highly centralized and democratic society at the centre of the North Pole, pictured as a fertile area beyond the polar ice. Frank Farleigh, the lone survivor of a polar expedition, is saved from inevitable death by the inhabitants of an unknown but highly developed civilization founded by the survivors of a previous expedition some hundred years previously. There are three nations founded by the three principal survivors. One is the utopian collectivist society of Zara, one the capitalist democracy of Uras, and the third a corrupt monarchy, Ura. Farleigh travels to all three and witnesses the eventual supremacy of the Zaran utopian ideal over the other two societies. Ultimately Farleigh settles down with his Zaran partner as a complete convert to Zaran ideals.
