ABSTRACT

The first is the New Departure, which posited a link between the physical force tradition, in the form of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and Clan na Gael on one side, and the constitutional tradition, represented by radicals among the Home Rule MPs at Westminster. The plan as proposed never took effect, but it paved the way for co-operation between the parliamentary party and the second development, the Land League, which emerged in 1879 in response to agricultural crisis and a mounting level of evictions. This resulted in a remarkable collection that provides invaluable detail on Clan na Gael and the Irish Republican Brotherhood, the New Departure, the Land League, the struggle for Home Rule and Irish nationalism up to and after the winning of independence.
