ABSTRACT

Augusta Mary Anne Arbuthnot – named after her godmother, Princess Augusta – was born at Kew on 13 October 1831 and baptized on 15 November that year. Her mother, Augusta Amelia Adolphina nee Papendiek, the youngest child of Christopher and Charlotte Papendiek, married George Arbuthnot at Kew on 22 April 1829. Little is known about Augusta’s early life. She was ‘brought up at home under the personal supervision of my mother’, where the instruction she received included religion and music. Augusta Arbuthnot married Vernon Delves Broughton at St John’s Notting Hill on 4 July 1861. In 1855, while an undergraduate at Oxford, he was appointed to the Treasury as a Junior Clerk, so Augusta probably was introduced to him by her father.
