ABSTRACT

Charlotte Papendiek’s 14 March 1835 letter to her daughter-in-law Bridget Ann Papendiek, transcribed below, is of interest not only as one of two letters by Charlotte Papendiek known to be extant but also, and particularly, for its comments about her Memoirs, which she was writing at that time. 1 She dated this letter ‘March 14’; it can be assigned to 1835 because she stated in the letter that setting down her Memoirs has ‘amused me two years since’ 2 and that her son Charles was unwell. The letter therefore must have been written before he died on 7 May 1835. Its first page is reproduced in Figure 1 on p. 316.
