ABSTRACT

The Edinburgh reform convention held during October and November 1793 was attended by Maurice Margarot and Joseph Gerrald as delegates of the London Corresponding Society (LCS). Both men departed London on 30 October 1793 and arrived in the Scottish capital eight days later with a view to promoting the cause of political reform. The cost of sending and maintaining Margarot and Gerrald in Edinburgh was a significant drain on LCS resources at the time, and this document — primarily addressed to non-LCS members — was a public appeal for funds to assist with the mission to Scotland and the reform campaign in general. The work, dated 15 November 1793, was issued the same day as an advertisement announcing a petition to George III. Margarot and Gerrald were both arrested on 5 December 1793 for their parts in the Edinburgh reform convention and were subsequently convicted of sedition and transported to Botany Bay, where Gerrald died in 1796.
