ABSTRACT

At a meeting of the London Corresponding Society (LCS) General Committee on 28 February 1793, a petition to parliament, written by Joseph Gerrald, was read and subsequently approved on 7 March 1793. The petition was printed and distributed to each division of the LCS for their consideration and parchment rolls prepared for the receipt of signatures. On 11 April 1793, 200 large posting bills and 1,000 smaller copies of Reform in parliament were printed by James Davidson to inform the public where the petition could be endorsed. This document was issued at least a further two times under the same title and the same date, but with a postscript detailing the number of signatures obtained. By early April 1793 approximately 1,300 signatures had been received; even the inmates of the King’s Bench prison were approached by Gerrald for their support. The petition was presented to the House of Commons by Philip Francis on 6 May 1793.
