ABSTRACT

The London Corresponding Society led a nationwide campaign in protest against the Treasonable Practices and Seditious Meetings bills following their introduction in parliament in early November 1795. A general meeting of the London Corresponding Society was held on 12 November 1795 at which three petitions against the government’s repressive legislation were read and approved. A bill has been introduced into the House of Lorek for the purpose of taking away all that remains of British Liberty - for the purpose of making it TREASON to Complain of your OPPRESSIONS, or, to speak your Sentiments with the least FREEDOM on Subjects essential to your Rights - Your Happiness - You’re very Existence. A Bill which subjects you to be hanged, Emboweled alive, Drawn and Quartered as Traitors and Ruffians; for words alone and renders it impossible for Britons to unbosom themselves, as heretofore, with the frankness and generosity of Men, without subjecting themselves to the AXE and the GIBBET.
