ABSTRACT

The LCS had a number of secretaries and presidents holding office at various times during 1797, and this particular work is signed by Thomas Goodwin (ft. 1797), as president, and Thomas Evans (fl. 1763-1821), as secretary. Issued in response to an unidentified letter from an unnamed member of parliament, this piece of printed correspondence was a defence of the call for an extension of the franchise: ‘Suffrage is no privilege … it is a common and sacred right, and the more widely the enjoyment of it is extended, if not universally, the more grievous the wrong which those who are debarred from it endure’ (cited from text).
