Treasurer’s accounts (1796—8)

For the nineteen months between July 1796 and January 1798 the LCS printed monthly financial statements in the form of treasurer’s accounts. During this period the Society faced a combination of pressures which drove the LCS into decline. Following the passing of the repressive ‘lwo Acts in December 1795, membership numbers were reduced and new recruits more difficult to find, in turn resulting in a loss of revenue from membership dues (on the Two Acts see Debates on the Treasonable Practices and Seditions Meetings Bill (1795) in Volume 6). The Society accrued a list of creditors over time, and the expence of sending John Binns (1772-1860) and John Gale Jones (1769-1838) on tour of regional centres proved to be a major drain on LCS funds. Moreover, following the arrest of these men the London Corresponding Society was faced with the legal costs involved in defending their representatives (sec Citizens, John Binns and John Gale Jones, the citizens we deputed to visit the popular society in Birmingham are speedily to take their trial on a charge of seditious conduct (1796) and The London Corresponding Society, in order to gratify the desire the public must naturally feel to know what are the particular accusations preferred against citizens Jones and Binns … present them with copies of the indictments (1797) in the Pamphlets section of this volume). The treasurer’s accounts also reveal the increasingly unprofitable publication of The Moral and Political Magazine of the Ijindon Corresponding Society, referred to in the statements as simply ‘magazines’ (see Volume 3 and Volume 4). In the end, the Society was accumulating debts at a much faster rate than it was acquiring revenue, and it was this financial burden which contributed to the decline of the LCS during the late 1790s.
