ABSTRACT

Human activity across the world is changing climate temperature faster than in any period in geological time. Greenhouse gases have been increasing ever faster since the start of the Industrial Revolution, and the persistence of CO2 in the atmosphere requires humans to reset their way of living, working, and playing to stop further climate damage and undo some of the damage already accumulated.

Unlike the coronavirus pandemic, we cannot vaccinate against a climate disaster. Our only remedy is a wide-scale change in human behaviour, at a significantly faster pace than we have seen up to now. Understanding nature allows innovative engineers to build processes better suited to a rising population with increased spending power. The reset needs the consent of everyone and for the changes to provide short-term as well as long-term results. Further innovations are needed, and they are already happening. Replacing fossil fuels with renewables requires many more changes within a total system that must be sustainable and safe. Change needs to provide scope for employment for all that need it. The proper use of technology is essential.
