ABSTRACT
It is difficult—it may be impossible—to understand the motives and emotions which drove Churchill to journey to Cairo in the first days of August, 1942. His complete volte face in his attitude to the Command in the Middle East and the Eighth Army in the fourteen days between August 5th and 19th must provide an answer. For seven of these fourteen days he was in Moscow.
