Less than a month before Rommel lay with three divisions at the mercy of the Eighth Army in the Ragil Depression, and was permitted to withdraw to occupy the commanding position of Himeimat, Churchill had sacked General Auchinleck and his Chiefs of Staff because Auchinleck had been unable to promise to attack and destroy the Panzer Armee Afrika by September 15th.
