ABSTRACT

Readings focus on people creating media content: online harassment faced by women journalists of color; how media professionals of color actively try to make a difference with the content they create; the challenges faced by Native American journalists and Native media; Eddie Huang’s short-lived involvement with the television show based on his memoir, Fresh Off the Boat; themes that the writers/directors of rape-revenge films have identified as important when creating such films. Readings also study underlying components especially prevalent in computers and digital media, such as algorithmic bias embedded in technologies we use daily, and acknowledging that tools used in digital media content creation—even when they seem to allow us great flexibility—can reinforce hierarchies of knowledge and power.
