ABSTRACT

Readings consider gender, race, class, and media: reviewing social scientific evidence demonstrating effects of stereotypical images on audiences; reviewing misrepresentation of people of color on TV news and the impact of such stereotypical news portrayals; studying how media may be used for social good and to uplift people and have positive effects; showing how adolescent girls’ selfie activities are related to self-objectification, appearance anxiety, and body esteem; showing how military veterans’ social media use can affect their well-being; looking at how socially vulnerable individuals use various media for information about impending disasters (weather events); and how race and class influence support for the Child Tax Credit.
