ABSTRACT

Readings look at audience reception, use, and interpretation of media content: online discussions about the use of Native American mascots; modest fashion bloggers offering an alternative reading of Muslim dress; a case study of climate activist Jamie Margolin which reflects on how girls of color engage in activism to resist racism, patriarchy, colonialism, and capitalism; studying how Twitter is used in a localized protest inspired by Colin Kaepernick’s “taking a knee” to protest police brutality; how audiences understand various forms of gender violence as represented in the Spanish-language film Casi Divas; and how Latinx youth use social and digital media for news and information; and how this relates to political participation.
