ABSTRACT

Community approaches to those who have committed offences should focus on approaches that will promote and accelerate the process of desistance—where individuals move away from their offending behaviour and build a positive future. This chapter will introduce the concept of desistance approaches, outlining how they might differ from other more programmatic approaches to addressing offending behaviour. It will include discussions on the role of the practitioner and on connections between desistance approaches and Australian research and practice as well as highlighting the connections between desistance and community justice.
