ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces some of the theoretical approaches that provide a basis for working in the community with people who have committed offences. Although it does provide some introduction into the broader sociological, psychological and biological theories of offending, it focuses on the applied theories that relate directly to work with individuals to address offending behaviour. The chapter considers the importance of taking an evidence-based approach, as well as discussing some of the challenges of building an evidence base in this area of work.
