ABSTRACT

The concepts of Community Justice and Restorative Justice are closely related, particularly in the values that they support and in their critique of existing criminal justice approaches. This is strongly the case in Australia, where some of the origin stories of restorative justice are located and where there are some forms of restorative approaches present in every state. Restorative approaches are particularly used in working in the community with Indigenous people and, again, this approach is taken for similar reasons to the taking of community justice approaches. The chapter introduces and explains the concept of restorative justice and its application and use within the Australian system, with examples from states and territories. It expands on the differences and similarities between community justice and restorative justice.
