ABSTRACT

Community justice approaches are often seen as being appropriate simply for individuals who have committed minor offences or those who are first-time offenders. In this chapter, it is argued that community justice, if it is to be considered as a serious alternative to other approaches to criminal justice, must also offer something to the debate on how to respond to those who have committed serious offences, those who offend persistently and those who are assessed as presenting a danger to the public. This chapter considers these issues within the Australian context, including approaches to dangerous offenders on parole and to those who have committed sexual offences.
